The National / Boxer (Original Master Recording)
(Mobile Fidelity 180g 45RPM 2LP)
The National’s Boxer marked the band’s 2007 breakthrough, pairing literary songwriting and understated melancholy with intricate, atmospheric arrangements. Matt Berninger’s unmistakable baritone anchors songs exploring adulthood, relationships, anxiety, and disillusionment, while the Dessner and Devendorf brothers build richly textured instrumentation around him. Standouts including “Fake Empire,” “Mistaken for Strangers,” “Slow Show,” and “Apartment Story” helped establish Boxer as a defining album of the band’s career.
Sourced from the original 16-bit/44.1kHz digital masters and mastered by Krieg Wunderlich, Mobile Fidelity’s 180g 45RPM 2LP edition is strictly limited to 3,000 numbered copies, pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing, and housed in a Stoughton gatefold jacket. The wider 45RPM grooves provide exceptional detail, depth, and definition, bringing greater presence to the album’s guitars, piano, strings, brass, and carefully layered chamber-rock arrangements.
Simultaneously intimate and expansive, Boxer balances simmering rhythms and open spaces with contributions from musicians including Sufjan Stevens, Padma Newsome, and Thomas Bartlett. Its combination of gorgeous melodies, nuanced performances, and deeply observant songwriting remains a cornerstone of 21st-century indie rock.
