Miles Davis assembled one of jazz’s most formidable lineups for 1958’s Milestones, the only studio album to feature his original sextet with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. Positioned between ’Round About Midnight and Kind of Blue, the album captures Davis moving beyond his bebop roots and toward the modal approach that would soon transform modern jazz. Highlights include the groundbreaking title track, “Dr. Jackle,” “Sid’s Ahead,” and definitive performances of “Straight, No Chaser” and “Two Bass Hit.”
Sourced from the original master tapes and mastered by Krieg Wunderlich, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered-edition 180g 33RPM LP is pressed on MoFi SuperVinyl for an exceptionally low noise floor and outstanding groove definition. The definitive stereo presentation gives each musician room to breathe, bringing greater dimension and presence to Davis’ trumpet, Coltrane and Adderley’s contrasting saxophone voices, Garland’s piano, and the driving rhythm section of Chambers and Jones.
Both a culmination of Davis’ hard-bop period and a preview of what was to come, Milestones captures six extraordinary musicians stretching the boundaries of jazz through explosive improvisation and remarkable ensemble chemistry. Its title track in particular points directly toward the modal explorations Davis would fully realize on Kind of Blue the following year.
