Inspired by heavyweight champion Jack Johnson as well as the music of Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone, Davis assembled a ferocious group of musicians including John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, Michael Henderson, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, and others. Across the sprawling “Right Off” and “Yesternow,” blistering guitar, relentless grooves, and Davis’ commanding trumpet create one of the hardest-hitting recordings of his electric period.
Sourced from the original analog master tapes and mastered by Krieg Wunderlich with assistance from Shawn R. Britton, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered-edition 180g 33RPM LP is pressed on MoFi SuperVinyl and housed in a Stoughton jacket. The ultra-low noise floor and exceptional groove definition bring greater clarity, immediacy, and impact to the recording, from McLaughlin’s distorted guitar attack and the weight of the rhythm section to the explosive presence of Davis’ trumpet.
Originally created as a soundtrack honoring the pioneering boxer, A Tribute to Jack Johnson became something much bigger: a fearless collision of jazz improvisation, rock intensity, and deep funk grooves. Producer Teo Macero’s editing transforms multiple sessions and lineups into a cohesive statement that remains one of the most adventurous and powerful albums in Davis’ catalog.
