PRS Silver Sky - Frost
“It’s been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that includes some of my favorite vintage specifications but with a modern spirit and aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like.” – John Mayer
The PRS Silver Sky in Frost is an idealized version of a vintage single coil guitar where every detail adds up and sets this instrument apart from the pack and the past. The result of a close collaboration between Grammy Award winning musician John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith, the Silver Sky reflects years of development and refinement. Drawing from their favorite elements of 1963 and 1964 instruments while keeping an eye on modern playability, the Silver Sky delivers the warmth and familiarity of a well loved vintage guitar with the precision and feel of a brand new one.
Some of the more distinctive specifications include the headstock shape, tuners, bridge, pickups, and neck and fretboard design. The headstock shape is based on PRS’s trademark silhouette but inverted to accommodate Mayer’s playing style and to maintain a consistent length of string behind the nut, which helps the guitar stay in tune. The tuners are traditional vintage style closed back units that incorporate PRS’s locking mechanism. The steel tremolo uses the patented PRS design with Gen III knife edge screws and is set flush to the body so it only travels downward in pitch. This setup increases the bridge’s contact with the body, making the guitar acoustically louder and improving the signal to noise ratio of the single coil pickups. The 635JM pickups are round, full, and musical, with a smooth high end that avoids harshness.
The Frost model comes with a rosewood fretboard paired to the 635JM R neck shape, which has subtly rounded shoulders for a comfortable, vintage inspired feel. Both the rosewood and maple fretboard versions share a 7.25 inch radius, designed through extensive research of vintage instruments and Mayer’s on stage testing. Additional high quality specifications include a bone nut, a molded metal jack plate shaped for easy cable access, retooled knobs, and PRS’s double acting truss rod, which is accessible from the front of the headstock. A PRS premium gig bag is included.
